Vedic compatibility (kundli matching) explained
Kundli matching is the Vedic way of comparing two birth charts before marriage. The best-known method, Ashtakoota or Guna Milan, scores eight factors, mostly based on each person's Moon, for a total out of 36. 18 is often quoted as the traditional pass mark. The score is a traditional tool, not a probability of a happy marriage.
What is kundli matching?
A kundli is a Vedic birth chart, calculated in the sidereal zodiac. Kundli matching compares two of them. In some Indian families it is part of deciding on a marriage, alongside everything else people weigh: values, family, the couple's own wishes.
There are several ways an astrologer can compare two kundlis. The one most people mean, and the one online calculators show, is Guna Milan, also called Ashtakoota ("eight parts"). AstroMedha describes it as "a score out of 36 that compares two birth charts before a marriage." (AstroMedha)
What do the eight kootas measure?
Each koota is a test worth a fixed number of points. They add up to 36:
| Koota | Points | Traditionally read as |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | a grouping of Moon signs into four classes |
| Vashya | 2 | mutual influence |
| Tara | 3 | birth star harmony |
| Yoni | 4 | an animal symbol for each birth star, read as instinctive match |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | friendship between the Moon sign rulers |
| Gana | 6 | one of three temperament types |
| Bhakoot | 7 | how the two Moon signs sit relative to each other |
| Nadi | 8 | a grouping of birth stars into three types |
The point values above are from AstroMedha's breakdown. The meanings in the right column are short summaries of how the tradition describes each one.
Almost all of it comes from one place in each chart. As AstroMedha puts it, the score "is built almost entirely from one thing in each chart: where the Moon stood at birth", meaning the Moon's sign and its nakshatra (lunar mansion). (AstroMedha)
What does the score mean?
Traditionally, a higher score is read as a better match. AstroMedha notes "The number 18 is quoted everywhere as the pass mark." Nadi and Bhakoot carry the most points, so a zero in either is often discussed on its own, and practitioners apply classical exceptions by looking at both charts.
It helps to be clear about what the number is. It counts how two charts do on eight specific traditional tests. It is not a percentage chance that a marriage will work, and there is no good scientific evidence that higher scores lead to happier or longer marriages.
The score also leaves a lot out, even by the standards of Vedic astrology itself. AstroMedha points out that "The 36 points read two Moons. They do not read the 7th house, its ruler", or where Venus sits, or which planetary period (dasha) each person is in. (AstroMedha)
So many Vedic astrologers look at the full charts, not only the score. And none of it looks at the things couples live with day to day: how two people communicate, share responsibilities, handle money and conflict, and treat each other.
A worked example
Say a couple's Guna Milan comes back at 22 out of 36, with 0 points in Bhakoot.
- 22 is above the traditional 18 mark, so on the number alone it passes.
- The 0 in Bhakoot is the part a traditional astrologer would look at more closely, including whether a classical exception applies.
- If one person's birth time is uncertain, the Moon's nakshatra might change, and so might the score. AstroMedha's own testing found the total "moves by 5 points or more" for a share of pairs when the birth time is unknown.
A fair reading of that result: it is one traditional data point. It says nothing certain about this couple's future, in either direction.
What about Mangal dosha and remedies?
Mangal dosha is a traditional rule about Mars sitting in certain houses. Some families worry about it a great deal, and you may hear claims that it harms a spouse. There is no scientific evidence that any chart placement harms a partner, and a chart is not a reason to judge a person's worth or suitability.
You may also be offered paid rituals or gemstones as remedies for a low score or a dosha. Be cautious. A remedy you are pressured to buy is a sales offer, not a requirement.
How Mystogian fits in
Mystogian calculates both Western and Vedic charts with astronomy code on our server, and you can switch between them. Bonds reads compatibility from two people's real charts. Like any compatibility reading, it is something to reflect on together, not a verdict.
FAQ
- Is 36 out of 36 a perfect marriage?
- No. It means two charts scored fully on eight traditional tests. It predicts nothing certain.
- Can kundli matching work without birth times?
- Partly. The score depends on the Moon's position, which can change across a day, so a missing time adds uncertainty.
- Is kundli matching the same as Western synastry?
- No. Synastry compares many placements between two charts. Guna Milan is a fixed points system based mostly on the Moon.
- Should we cancel a marriage over a low score?
- A score is not a good reason on its own to make a life decision. Talk about the relationship itself.
