What are houses in a birth chart?
Houses are the 12 sections of a birth chart, each tied to an area of life such as home, work or relationships. Signs describe what the sky looked like. Houses place that sky around the spot where you were born, starting from the rising sign. That is why houses need an accurate birth time.
What is the difference between a sign and a house?
They are two different ways of dividing the same circle.
- Signs divide the Sun's yearly path into 12 slices. They tell you where a planet was against the zodiac. Most people born on the same date share a Sun sign, wherever they were born; on the day the Sun changes sign, the exact birth moment decides it.
- Houses divide the sky as seen from your exact time and place. They turn with the Earth, so a full cycle passes through all 12 roughly once a day.
An astrologer reads a placement as three layers: the planet (what), the sign (how), and the house (where in life). "Venus in Taurus in the 10th house" uses all three.
What does each house mean?
In modern Western astrology, the houses are read like this:
- 1st: you, your body, how you meet the world. Starts at the rising sign.
- 2nd: money, possessions, what you value.
- 3rd: communication, siblings, your local area, everyday learning.
- 4th: home, family, roots.
- 5th: creativity, play, romance, children.
- 6th: daily routines, work tasks, habits.
- 7th: partners and one-to-one relationships.
- 8th: shared money, intimacy, endings and change.
- 9th: travel, higher learning, beliefs.
- 10th: career, public role, reputation.
- 11th: friends, groups, hopes.
- 12th: solitude, rest, what is hidden.
These are traditional meanings, not tested facts. Other traditions, including Vedic astrology, have their own house meanings. A planet in a house is read as a theme to reflect on, not as a statement about what will happen in that part of your life.
Why do houses need a birth time?
Because the houses are built from the rising sign, and the rising sign changes roughly every two hours as the Earth turns.
Get the time wrong by an hour and the rising sign can change. If it does, every house can start in a different place, and a planet can move into a different house. Without a birth time, an astrologer can still read your planets in their signs, but the houses become a guess. Our guide to charts without a birth time covers what you can still read.
What is a house system, and which one is right?
A house system is the method used to draw the lines between houses. There are many, and they disagree.
Kerykeion's guide sums up the shared question: "Every house system answers the same question: where does one house end and the next begin?" (Kerykeion) Two you will meet often:
- Whole Sign: "The sign containing the Ascendant degree becomes the entire first house," and each following sign becomes the next house. Kerykeion calls it "the oldest system in Western astrology." (Kerykeion)
- Placidus: "a time-based (temporal) quadrant system." It divides the sky by time, so its houses are unequal in size. At very high latitudes, above roughly 66 degrees, it can break down. (same source)
Changing the house system can change which house a planet falls in, sometimes by a whole house. No study has shown that one system describes people better. It is a choice of method, so check which one your app or astrologer uses before comparing charts.
A worked example
Alex was born with a Leo rising sign, 20 degrees into Leo, and has Saturn at 2 degrees Taurus.
Whole Sign. Leo is the whole 1st house. Count forward one sign per house: Virgo 2nd, Libra 3rd, Scorpio 4th, Sagittarius 5th, Capricorn 6th, Aquarius 7th, Pisces 8th, Aries 9th, Taurus 10th. Saturn is in the 10th house.
Placidus. The 10th house starts at the exact Midheaven degree, which depends on Alex's time and place. If that cusp falls at, say, 8 degrees Taurus, Saturn at 2 degrees Taurus sits just before it, in the 9th house.
Same planet, same sign, two house answers. Neither chart is wrong. They follow different rules. This is also why whole-sign houses only need the correct rising sign, while a quadrant system like Placidus needs a more precise birth time.
How does Mystogian calculate houses?
Your Mystogian birth chart is calculated with astronomy code on our server, from your birth date, time and place. The AI never calculates planet positions. As with any app, you can check the rising sign and house placements against a free calculator, using the same zodiac and the same house system.
FAQ
- What does an empty house mean?
- Only that no planet sits there. Every chart has some. The house is still read through the sign on it.
- Why do two apps put my planet in different houses?
- They may use different house systems, a different zodiac, or a slightly different birth time.
- Are the 1st and 7th houses always opposite?
- Yes. In quadrant and Equal house systems, the 1st and 7th begin at the Ascendant and the opposite point, the Descendant. In Whole Sign houses, they are the signs containing those two points.
- Can I learn my houses without a birth time?
- Not reliably. A rectified or estimated time gives a best guess, and it should be labelled as one.
