Rising sign vs sun sign: what is the difference?
Your Sun sign is the sign the Sun was in on your birthday, so your birth date usually settles it. Your rising sign is the sign coming up over the eastern horizon at the minute and place you were born, so it needs an accurate birth time. In Western astrology, they are read as different layers of a chart.
What is a Sun sign?
It is the zodiac sign the Sun was passing through when you were born. The Sun spends about a month in each sign, so everyone born in roughly the same four weeks shares a Sun sign. It is the sign newspaper horoscopes are written for.
One catch: the date the Sun moves into the next sign shifts by about a day from year to year. If you were born on or near a changeover day, your Sun sign depends on the year and the time, and you should check it with a calculator rather than a date list.
What is a rising sign?
The rising sign, also called the Ascendant, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place of your birth.
As the Earth turns, every sign rises in turn over about a day. So the rising sign changes about every two hours on average, faster or slower depending on the sign and your latitude, and it depends on where you were born as well as when. Two people born on the same day in the same city can have different rising signs if they were born a few hours apart.
It also matters for the rest of the chart. The rising sign sets the starting point for the houses, so a different rising sign moves the planets into different houses.
How do astrologers read them differently?
These are traditional readings, not established facts about personality.
- In Western astrology, the Sun is read as your core sense of self, what you are building toward.
- The rising sign is read as how you meet the world: first impressions, your approach to new situations, and how others may see you at first.
- The Moon, the third part of the "Big Three," is read as your emotional side.
Vedic astrology puts heavy weight on the rising sign (the lagna) and the Moon, and it measures signs with the sidereal zodiac, so both your Sun and rising sign may be different there.
Controlled tests have not shown that charts describe personality reliably. In a 1985 double-blind study in Nature, astrologers could not match charts to personality profiles better than chance. (Carlson 1985, via Wikipedia) So treat both descriptions as prompts to reflect on, not as a verdict on who you are.
How exact does my birth time need to be?
It depends on what you need.
- The rising sign only needs the time to be right enough to land in the right sign. If you were born in the middle of a sign's rise, a time off by 20 or 30 minutes may still give the same sign. If you were born near a change, a few minutes can flip it.
- The exact degree of the rising sign moves much faster, about one degree every four minutes on average. Some house systems and techniques use that degree, so they need a more precise time.
If you don't know your time at all, your Sun sign is still safe unless you were born on a changeover day, but your rising sign is unknown.
Can two people with the same birthday have different rising signs?
Two friends, Jo and Kai, were both born on 10 May 2004 in Manila. Both are Taurus Suns, because the Sun was in Taurus all day.
Jo was born at 6:00 in the morning, Kai at 6:00 in the evening. Twelve hours apart, the eastern horizon faced roughly the opposite side of the zodiac. Their rising signs are different, and so are the houses their planets fall in. Same Sun sign, different charts.
To find their own rising signs, they each put their exact time and place into a calculator, using the same zodiac and house system.
How does Mystogian work out your rising sign?
Mystogian calculates your chart, including your rising sign, with astronomy code on our server from your birth date, time and place. The AI never calculates planet positions. If you don't know your birth time, the app still accepts your details.
